Eternals’ Barry Keoghan Played Peter Parker In Spider-Man Fan Film

Cast as Druig in Eternals, Barry Keoghan adds a new blockbuster credit to an already-impressive career. He’s appeared in films like The Green Knight and acclaimed series like Chernobyl. He’s next going to show up in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Yet, all actors make student films and shorts with their friends, and Barry Keoghan and his friends made a Spider-Man fan film. It’s a strange little Marvel coincidence but shows how deeply these stories and characters run in the culture. By the time Keoghan hit the scene in the early 2010s, Andrew Garfield just landed the role of Peter Parker for the first reboot.

The film was directed by Paudie Baggott and edited by John Walters. Baggott has gone on to direct another short film called Rip to the Rescue, a film set in post-apocalyptic Ireland. Still, the two-minute short film is a pretty good piece of Spider-Man filmmaking It’s really more of a teaser of the larger story. We see Barry Keoghan briefly suit up as Spider-Man, but most of the fan film focuses on Peter Parker. We see him longing for Gwen and casually using his spider-sense.

It’s definitely worth watching, and the fact that Keoghan has gone on to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes it even sweeter. Just like Simu Liu shooting his shot on Twitter for Marvel to hire him for Shang-Chi, Keoghan manifested that Marvel connection. (He also probably auditioned a bunch, got a good agent, proved himself in his 30-odd other roles, and probably got really lucky.) So, as we wait for Spider-Man: No Way Home, we also theorize about whether or not there are more Spiders-Men than Tom Holland in the film. Perhaps there’s a hole in the multiverse out there where Peter Parker looks a lot like Druig.

Eternals is coming to Disney+, and Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters December 17, 2021.
